When farming for materials (Orange materials anyway), here are some tips:
Each five tiles you clear by attacking or opening a chest will earn you 1 orange material on the applicable levels. The tile you start on and the boss tile do not count as part of your five. So clear 10 tiles, then fight the boss - you will get 2 materials. Although it is not the most efficient way mathematically, I recommend that as soon as you find the boss tile, count how many tiles you cleared off (don't count the tile you're on) and round up to the nearest multiple of five, and fight the boss tile. This will let you take your chances at earning the 3 bonus materials more frequently and can (if you're lucky) earn you more materials than farming the whole stage).
